Hedges are a collection of shrubs grown in patterns that are both decorative and useful. Hedges increase privacy and shelter lawns from wind and noise. They make attractive alternatives to traditional fencing along property lines. When carefully manicured, they create delightful borders in formal gardens.

Many varieties of blooming and ornamental plants that thrive in the Tampa area are suitable for growing into hedges. Consider your overall landscape design when choosing the plants for your hedgerow. Podocarpus is an evergreen shrub appropriate for the extensive pruning that creates box or topiary hedges. The bushy and exuberant bottlebrush and the spreading jatropha are more freeform. Azaleas can be trimmed into a neat flowering hedge, while the exotic bougainvillea usually does better when trained along an existing fence. Within a season or two it will be difficult to see the bricks or boards beneath it.

Cultivate hedges to border walkways or paths. Create secluded bowers with strategically placed hedges or use them to conceal open spaces around private areas such as patios or swimming pools. Artfully placed hedges can frame a rose garden or fountain. Choose blooming varieties for color and evergreens for elegance.

Whether your landscape design is structured and formal or more wild and eclectic, we have the plants and the expertise to help you design a hedge that suits your needs.
