Unlike the annuals that bloom for a season and then fade away, groundcover plants are permanent additions to your garden. They produce lush greenery and brilliant blossoms year after year. Often used to fill bare spots in flowerbeds or between foundation plants, groundcover is also a blessing for the busy homeowner. Once established, individual plants spread quickly and require little care. In low-traffic areas, groundcover can often substitute for turf, creating a unique and beautiful “lawn” with a minimum of work.

Take a survey of the space you’d like to fill before selecting your groundcover plants. Many varieties require full sun to achieve maximum cover, while others prefer some shade. Choosing the right plant for the right place will help you avoid frustration and reduce costs, since you’ll need fewer plants to get started. Here in Tampa, most sun-loving groundcover plants are appropriate for cultivating almost anywhere that gets plenty of light. Shade-tolerant varieties are better suited to spaces below porches and overhanging eaves or under trees.

Available groundcover plants include low-growing blanket plants, small spreading shrubs or upright grasses and lilies that produce big, showy blooms. Fill a large space quickly, cut down on routine maintenance or complete the look of your landscaping with groundcover.
