Bottlebrush Trees or Shrubs

Plant a bottlebrush in your Tampa yard to enjoy an ornamental and spectacular tropical evergreen shrub or tree.  A native to Australia, it loves warm weather, moisture, and sun, all of which Florida can provide in abundance.   Most Bottlebrush bloom with a bright red flower.  The long, cylindrical stems arranged in a brush-like pattern give the tree its name.  It generally grows to a height of 10-15 feet with a rounded crown.

Care Information

Plant the Bottlebrush while it is still relatively young in an area with enough room for a 15 foot tree and plenty of sunlight.  A little protection from the wind would not hurt either since it would be vulnerable to braking in some of the strong storms we get in Florida.  Water regularly when freshly planted but too much moisture over a long period of time can cause root rot. Use a low-phosphorus fertilizer twice a year in the spring to keep the leaves green and the flowers as red as possible.  Once the tree is established it tends to remain very drought tolerant and does not mind salt.

Design Ideas

The Bottlebrush can serve many purposes in a Florida landscape.  It fits in well because it is a striking, colorful tropical tree that can complement traditional palm trees.  A row of them could be a great way to cover a wall or define the green area between two parking lots.  It can also add a taller tree as the focal point to a butterfly garden.
